EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
