The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
