Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
